It can also be used to prompt for important Improvement Plan status reviews or for any number of date related issues. At right is an example of an event definition, and following that, how that event would appear on the individual’s calendar.

One of the most important parts of any Improvement Program is knowing how it is going to be funded and staffed. SIMPL™’s Strategic Actions include provisions for declaring the required number of Full Time Equivalences (FTE’s) and their names. The process of setting up a Strategic Action also includes declaring

Where it is going to come from, and

How it is going to be used.

Prior to getting to this time, however, one of the principal’s first jobs at the beginning of each fiscal year, is to declare the available sources of funds and the total amount available in each of those sources. To help with this, SIMPL™ provides a funds setup capability which identifies every possible legislated source (federal and state) and all previously defined local funds sources. For each source, the principal selects each source that applies to this school, and the amount of funding available for each. As Strategic Actions are defined and refined, SIMPL™ tracks the total amount reserved, and the current balance still available.

There are 3 summary reports provided by SIMPL™

Funding by Strategy & Use

The Funding by Source and Use

Summary by Source

In each case, SIMPL™ maintains all totals dynamically, as strategies are defined and refined. Several example reports are shown below.

The report that SIMPL™ has pulled together is a condensation of the extremely copious report provided by the Texas AEIS data system. An example from our “Model High School” is shown below. Remember, this is a long report, but is condensed from a truly long report. The report is also provided for District level performance

The Advanced Analysis Section contains a powerful wizard to allow you to analyze standard assessment and attendance data along any meaningful axes to highlight/dramatize specific strengths/weaknesses manifested by anomalies in the data. The Advanced Analysis facility enables you to customize the title and include any table generated here in your C/DIP at the click of the mouse.

In general, the tool presents itself as two side-by-side collections of lists. The lists in the left collection generally form table Row Headers. The List in the right collection generally form table Column Headers. The use of the analysis tool is very intuitive. Once you build a report or two, you will understand perfectly how it works, and be able to build some marvelously specific tables without once asking for assistance from your over-worked IT Department. Give it a try — you will be amazed.

The Tool may be used on Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), on Attendance data (AEIS), and to develop charts and graphs from data generated by SIMPL’s Opinion Survey Tool.

The following are exampes of how to use the Advanced Analysis tool on TAKS data:

Advanced Analysis TAKS Report Specification

So many times, while researching the need for SIMPL™, we would walk into a school, ask to see the state mandated Campus Improvement Plan, and would have to wait patiently for some alert staff member to:

Remember what it was, and

Remember which dusty shelf had become it’s storage place.

We also found that some organizations (districts and schools), would often respond to such a request with something like,

“Do you want to see the ‘Compliance plan,’ or do you want to know what we are actually doing?”

Often, plans would contain page after page of briefly described strategies (sometimes one-line descriptions) — actions with nebulous definition, but that could be done, and if done, some improvement doubtless would probably result. Such plans, in the interest of brevity, would sometimes not identify milestones, dates, responsible persons, full descriptions of new or altered methods, expected results, affected subjects, NCLB Improvement Areas, etc. In defense of these organizations and their compliance plans, fleshing out all these elements for each strategy would easily and frequently result in tomes containing hundreds of pages.

In this environment, schools often only print one copy to submit for approval and one copy for the shelf in case some nosey busybody asks to see it. Don’t even think about changing environments or requirements at the school potentially resulting in the continuous need for mid-course adjustments during the year. Even if the schools recognized and made the adjustments anyway (to their actual plan), rarely would they take on the onerous task of updating the official copies of the compliance Improvement Plan. Hard copy Improvment Plans inhibit dynamic adjustments to continuously changing needs. Very few organization would be expected to actually use such hard copy plans.

SIMPL™ responds to these issues by providing its users with an online, multiyear “Living Improvement Plan.” We can produce at any time a copy of your school’s current improvement plan (in “>PDF” format for printing or inclusion in local websites) but we also continuously maintain web-page-ready, archival versions of the current Living Plan. It can be printed but rarely is–your constituents can navigate to and examine the current plan at their leisure. Even the plan approval process is facilitated by SIMPL’s support for electronic submittal and approval.

The Campus Improvement Plan is important, but In SIMPL™, the Improvement Plan is not the principal aim of the planning exercise; execution of the plan to achieve the desired Goals and Objectives is the principal aim of our service. Executing the plan is a continuous process. It also is a learning process, not just for students but also for administrators and teachers. For instance, one of our services is to provide a dynamic Objectives Status Report to aid in periodic local and board level reviews of the execution of the school’s plan and to ensure that the desired results are being realized. This enables schools/districts to quickly and easily adjust to address the dynamics of on-the-spot organizational needs and to fold the adjustments into the current online Improvement Plan. Because the plan can be printed at any time it rarely is. If anyone asks to see the Improvement Plan, you can confidently direct them to your website to see your always current plan.

Most importantly, when requirements or other needed changes or adjustments are detected, SIMPL provides mechanisms to incorporate the changes immediately, without having to wait for the next planning cycle to properly fund, document, and deploy the mid-course corrections.

In summary, SIMPL™ is an on-line service and that means that your Goals, Objectives, and very importantly, your Strategies, are easily adjusted to address:

changing conditions,

better understood needs, and

better understood, more effective methods.

In SIMPL™, a Strategic Action is a project or task defined and executed to improve some condition in your educational process. It is formally tied to a specific Improvement Plan “Objective” (and through that to a specific Plan “Goal “). In addition, the Strategic Action is tied to one or more subject areas, and to [...]

In SIMPL™, a Strategic Action is a project or task defined and executed to improve some condition in your educational process. It is formally tied to a specific Improvement Plan “Objective” (and through that to a specific Plan “Goal “). In addition, the Strategic Action is tied to one or more subject areas, and to one or more of the 8 NCLB Improvement areas.

Any Strategic Action worth doing will cost something, money and or people, and SIMPL™ asks you to explicitly quantify funding and staffing sources, including declaring how any money involved is going to be spent (people, training, materials, etc.).

All this sounds like a lot of work, but, an ill planned strategy is very likely to be an ill done strategy. SIMPL™ wants you to succeed wonderfully in your improvement effort. Because of that desire, we also ask for Formative and Summative Benchmarks, complete with dates and persons responsible. We even allow you to specify notification lists of responsible persons to alert as the event nears (see our EVENT Calendar description). To make the defining process easier, wherever there is a specific list of items from which you must choose (funding resources, subjects, etc.), we will give you the entire list from which to select your option(s).

The last (arguably most important) attribute of the Strategic Action is that there is a distinct life-cycle stage associated with each of the actions. Bacause of their importance the stages are listed below:

Definition: The action is in the process of being defined. funding at this stage is counted, but is considered tentative.

Submitted: The definition is thought to be complete, and the action is submitted to the Campus or District Administration for approval.

Approved: The action is approved, but not yet deployed. it may be awaiting materials, training, etc. Resources are considered to be committed in this stage.

Improvement: The action is fully deployed in the system. This is the most exciting stage of a Strategy, where the fruits of improvement labor are finally being realized in improved student performance. This is the only stage in SIMPL™ planning that actually reaches the formal Improvement Plan. After a Strategy has been fully deployed for one year, it’s life cycle stage is advanced to the “Current Practice.” It is during this year, and only during this year that real improvement from this action can occur.

Current Practice: This is the body of practices that define what you are doing in your school to achieve the objectives established for your organization. It is from this body of actions/practices the that old saw is derived, “If you keep on doing what you have been doing, you will keep on getting what your have been getting.”

Inactive: At least once a year, you need to re-evaluate both your Improvement Strategies and your Current Practice Strategies. If a strategy is not producing commensurate with it’s cost, it needs to be removed to the Inactive Life Cycle Stage. If it is producing and is an Improvement Strategy, it should be advanced to the Common Practice Life Cycle Stage.

The complete format for a SIMPL™ Strategic Action may be viewed below:

SIMPL™ Strategic Action
